Wednesday September 22th, 1999: "A Man Said to the Universe"
I just got back from the "The Immorality of Religious Discourse" lecture I talked about earlier. I was very impressed, and decided to sign up for membership for the Atheist and Humanist organization. (I'm also thinking of volunteering to help out the art house that's going to show all of Studio Ghibli's work next month. Now now one can claim I'm a fatass loser that isn't involved in anything--now I'm a fat ass loser that is involved somewhat!)

It wasn't nearly as extreme as I thought it would be. She (the Professor) didn't say that religion is immoral and should be abolished or anything crazy like that. She did say that religion advocates that 'the ends justify the means', subordinates conscience to authority, and other similar things. Her arguments were logical and made sense. She also argued that God is not needed for morals... I wont get into all of that here, however. I was amazed at the diversity of the group's members. People of every race and 'lifestyle' were represented. The organization's president is really cool. He has this weird three-pronged mow-hawk that I can't quite describe. It was very refreshing and enlightening to see so many different people.

I had wanted to attend a Christian group's "Evolution Conspiracy!" lecture tomorrow, but I don't think I can make it. A flyer they had up was claiming that the earth is much younger than scientists say (dinosaurs existsed only thousands of years ago, and not millions, and so on). What, if any, evidence they have to support this must be interesting, but I'd rather watch Goonies with my floor-mates.

I'm debating whether I should tell my family about my membership in the Atheist and Humanist organization. Actually, to be more specific, I'm worried about telling one of my brothers. While I'd hardly call him either left or right wing, he is a bit of a racist and homophobic, so maybe he'd respond negatively... I dunno. My friend laughed at me when I told him about it. I suppose joining an atheist organization sounds kinda extreme to most people, but I don't regret it.

Well, my internet connection just shit on itself...it's been like that the last few days. So I guess I'm running out of reasons to not study. Maybe I'll listen to my vast MP3 collection. Speaking of MP3s, I managed to get the main theme of Princess Mononoke in MP3 format. It was positively beautiful. Jo Hisaishi has made some of the greatest soundtracks for Studio Ghibli. Amazon.com has said my Princess Mononoke art book has shipped. My Miyazaki book, and the Mononoke soundtrack should ship soon. I'm so psyched! Anyways, I'm done boring everyone for today.
